Christmas tree stand test: four types, two trees

We put the same trees in four types of stand. The results will help anyone who advises customers at the shelf.

What we tested and how

A customer buying a stand asks three things: will the tree tip over, will the trunk fit, and how often does the water need topping up. We checked this on four types of stand sold online:

  • a plastic stand with splayed legs and plastic screws,
  • a plastic stand with a round base and plastic screws,
  • a decorative metal stand with metal screws,
  • a self-clamping KAMAI stand with a lever and the one-cable system.

In each stand we put the same trees from one plantation: a tree about 2 m tall with a medium trunk and a tree about 2.5 m tall with a thicker trunk. We assessed assembly, trunk fit, stability, the water reservoir and removing the tree after the test.

Plastic stand with splayed legs

The trunk opening has a fixed diameter. The thin trunk was hard to clamp with the plastic screws, and the thick one did not fit at all. Assembly took two people. The water reservoir was very small and had no level indicator, so the water has to be topped up several times a day.

In our test the plastic legs bent during assembly, and when the tree was rocked gently they snapped and the tree fell. We could not test removing the tree.

Plastic stand with a round base

Here too the opening has a fixed diameter, and the trunk is held by plastic screws with no sharp tip. The stand we tested had no water reservoir, so the tree dries out quickly. The thin plastic base deformed under the weight of the tree and the tree began to wobble. The seller recommended weighing the base down, for example with sand.

This is a stand for one or two seasons. With children, pets and lights plugged in, the risk of it tipping over is real.

Decorative metal screw-type stand

We tested a hand-made model from a Polish manufacturer, in black and gold. It looks the best of the four, and the sharpened metal screws hold the trunk more firmly than plastic ones.

There are two limitations. The trunk has to fit the opening: one that is too thick has to be trimmed down, or you buy a bigger model. The reservoir is small and has no indicator. In our test the tree stood at an angle, the legs bent slightly and the trunk jammed so badly that it took two people to remove it. It is a good choice for a small tree with a thin trunk, provided the customer measures the trunk before buying.

Self-clamping KAMAI stand with a lever

You push the tree onto the spike, hold it upright and clamp with the lever. A single cable grips the trunk from several sides, so the stand adapts to trunks from 3 to 17 cm in diameter, including uneven ones. You can correct the position without taking the tree out. Both test trees stood firm, even when rocked harder, and after the test we removed them without effort.

What else we checked:

  • water reservoir from 2 to 6.3 l, depending on the model, with a float water level indicator (plus LED diodes in the SELECT series),
  • polypropylene (PP) body, ABS clamping hooks and steel one-cable mechanism,
  • wide, weighted base,
  • 5-year warranty and TÜV Thüringen certificate.

The mechanism has been developed for over 20 years by a team of Polish and German specialists.

What to tell the customer at the shelf

Customers most often compare stands by price. These four sentences help show the difference:

  1. “It takes any tree with a trunk up to 17 cm.” No need to measure or trim the trunk.
  2. “One person can set the tree up.” The lever clamps the trunk, and the position can be corrected.
  3. “You top up the water less often, and the indicator shows when.” Needles drop more slowly and the floor stays dry.
  4. “The stand will last many seasons.” 5-year warranty and TÜV Thüringen certificate.
